Members of the Kent & Medway Manufacturing Focus Group (KMFG) enjoyed an opportunity to explore one of Kent’s most recognised producers during a summer site visit to Balfour Winery on 26 August.
Bringing together manufacturing and engineering businesses alongside education partners from across Kent & Medway, the visit offered delegates a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how one of England’s leading wine producers combines innovation, technology, quality and operational excellence to deliver award-winning products. The programme included a guided tour of the vineyard, orchards and production facilities, with a particular focus on manufacturing processes, irrigation systems and the journey from vineyard to finished product.
Attendees gained valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing modern producers, from maintaining quality and consistency at scale to embracing innovation and sustainability while operating in a competitive market.
A highlight of the visit was the exceptional vineyard tour led by Esther from the Balfour Winery team. Her expertise, enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge brought the wine production process to life, providing attendees with a greater appreciation of the craftsmanship, planning and attention to detail required at every stage of production.
The group was also treated to outstanding hospitality throughout the morning, with members praising the professionalism of the Balfour Winery team and the opportunity to network with peers in a relaxed and engaging setting.
While operating in a different sector to many KMFG members, Balfour Winery demonstrated the common threads that connect all successful production businesses.

KMFG members will meet again on 30th September at Kenward Place, where Tudor Price, Chief Executive of Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce, will be the headline speaker. Tudor will outline the range of support available to manufacturing businesses through the Chamber, including business growth support, exporting, skills and workforce development, and opportunities to strengthen connections across the wider business community.
