Local Skills Improvement Plan
by Sarah Parrish

Thank you to everyone who joined us at yesterday’s Kent & Medway Manufacturing Focus Group (KMFG), hosted at the beautiful Frasers of Egerton. The morning brought together manufacturers, educators, and sector leaders for a dynamic exchange of ideas, updates, and opportunities.  All set against the backdrop of warm hospitality and meaningful conversation.

Spotlight on Speakers

We were delighted to welcome two guest speakers who brought valuable insights to the room:

  • Patrick Glencross of Furley Page delivered a timely update on the upcoming changes to the Employment Rights Bill, helping attendees navigate the evolving legal landscape with clarity and confidence.
  • Tym Wright of Simtek EMS introduced us to his business and showcased the impressive range of products they support the manufacture of. A testament to the innovation and capability thriving in our region.

Skills Update from Camilla Maurice

Camilla Maurice also provided a comprehensive skills update, highlighting several key developments:

  • North Kent College has successfully secured its position as the South East’s Construction Technical Excellence College — a major win for regional skills and training.
  • The launch of Foundation Apprenticeships opens new pathways for learners and employers alike.
  • Skills England is transitioning from the Department for Education to the Department for Work and Pensions, signalling a shift in national strategy.
  • Policy Connect has issued a Call for Evidence for their SME Manufacturing enquiry. We encourage all stakeholders to help shape future policy by submitting evidence directly here, or by sharing with the LSIP team who will collate and forward responses.

What’s Next: KMFG at RBLI

Our next KMFG event will be a site visit to RBLI in Aylesford on Wednesday 29th October, 10am–12pm. This is more than a tour.  It’s a chance to see social enterprise in action, connect with fellow manufacturers, and explore how RBLI is driving impact at the heart of UK industry.

Book your free place here, we look forward to welcoming you.

Thank you again for your continued support and participation. Together, we’re building a stronger, more connected manufacturing community across Kent & Medway.
