A new £1 billion government investment aims to support 50,000 more young people into apprenticeships and high‑quality training over the next three years, placing apprenticeships at the heart of a reformed skills system. The reforms are designed to break down barriers to opportunity, tackle youth unemployment, and ensure apprenticeships are valued alongside academic routes.
The announcement includes measures to fully fund apprenticeship training costs for young people at small businesses, making it easier for employers to take on apprentices, and a renewed focus on providing clear routes into skilled work. The reforms form part of a wider ambition to give young people more choice in how they progress into employment and to better align skills provision with the needs of employers and the economy.
What this means for Kent & Medway
For Kent & Medway, this investment strongly aligns with priorities identified through our Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP), including improving entry routes for young people into skilled employment, supporting employers to grow their future workforce, and strengthening apprenticeship pathways across key local sectors. Fully funded apprenticeship training for young people and increased flexibility for employers will help address challenges raised by businesses in the region, particularly around recruitment, workforce replacement, and progression routes into priority sectors such as construction, engineering, health & social care, digital and hospitality.
You can read more here for further detail on the support that will be available, with the Kent & Medway LSIP continuing to work with employers, providers and partners to help translate national reforms into clear local opportunities for both young people and businesses.
