A Kent-based fine art printing specialist is demonstrating the transformative potential of digital technology and skills investment, following support from the Made Smarter South East programme.
Ashford-based Art4site, a specialist studio producing museum-quality prints for artists, galleries and publishers, has significantly enhanced its production processes and digital capability — positioning the business for future growth.
Driving productivity and innovation
Like many growing businesses, Art4site faced increasing operational complexity as demand rose. Manual processes, repeated data entry and time-intensive workflows were limiting efficiency, increasing the risk of errors and creating challenges in scaling the business.
Through engagement with Made Smarter South East, the business undertook a Digital Transformation Workshop, identifying key opportunities to streamline operations, improve integration between systems, and adopt new technologies.
A key investment was the introduction of a next-generation large-format scanner, which has dramatically improved production capability. Tasks that previously took hours can now be completed in minutes, allowing the team to increase capacity, reduce bottlenecks and enhance quality.
A whole-business approach to digital transformation
Alongside investment in technology, Art4site has taken a strategic approach to digital transformation, supported by Made Smarter’s leadership and skills programmes.
This has included:
Unlocking new skills through digital internships
A key part of Art4site’s transformation has been the introduction of new digital skills through Made Smarter’s Digital Internship programme.
The programme connects manufacturers with university students and graduates, providing businesses with access to specialist digital expertise while offering students valuable real-world experience.
At Art4site, this included the placement of Daniel Olusakin, a Computer Science student from the University of Kent, who supported systems and automation improvements within the business.
Working on production workflows, Daniel helped improve the integration between customer-facing systems and backend processes, reducing manual handling and supporting a more efficient, streamlined operation.
This collaboration demonstrates how internships can play a critical role in accelerating digital adoption; bringing fresh perspectives, technical capability and capacity to deliver change, while also strengthening the future skills pipeline for the sector.
