The Government has launched a new £10 million Hospitality Grant Scheme, providing funding over the next three years to support independent pubs, restaurants and cafés across the UK. While the scheme will help businesses start new ventures and bring vacant premises back into use, one of the most significant opportunities for Kent and Medway is its focus on skills, training and workforce development.
The scheme will fund projects that help people develop the skills, confidence and work readiness needed to secure employment and build careers in hospitality. The Government has highlighted the important role the sector plays in providing first job opportunities, helping individuals gain transferable skills and supporting local economic growth.
Skills at the Heart of Hospitality Growth
Hospitality remains a vital part of the Kent and Medway economy, employing thousands of people across restaurants, cafés, hotels, visitor attractions, catering businesses and pubs. However, employers continue to report challenges in recruiting and retaining staff, as well as concerns around work readiness, communication skills and awareness of career opportunities within the sector.
The new grant scheme recognises that investment in people is just as important as investment in premises. Funding can support training initiatives that help individuals develop the practical skills, behaviours and experience required to succeed in hospitality careers, creating stronger pathways into employment for young people, career changers and those furthest from the labour market.
Aligning with Kent and Medway’s Skills Priorities
The announcement closely aligns with priorities identified through the Kent & Medway Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) and the recently published Tourism & Visitor Economy Sector Skills Plan.

A key area of focus within the Tourism & Visitor Economy Sector Skills Plan is the continued growth of the Hospitality Skills Passport (HSP), a nationally recognised employer-led programme designed to prepare individuals for employment through industry-relevant training and practical experience. The programme combines work-readiness training, workplace exposure and nationally recognised credentials, helping learners move more effectively into hospitality roles.
The Government’s new funding provides a valuable opportunity for organisations to develop similar initiatives, expand successful programmes, and strengthen local training provision that responds directly to employer demand.
Supporting Communities and Economic Growth
Alongside workforce development, the new scheme aims to support the wider role hospitality businesses play within local communities. More than £3 million of the funding has been earmarked for Pub is The Hub, helping rural and community pubs diversify their offer and continue serving as important social and economic assets.
For Kent and Medway, where tourism and hospitality businesses are critical to local prosperity, the funding presents an opportunity to help businesses grow while simultaneously addressing long-standing skills challenges.
