The Kent & Medway Manufacturing Focus Group (KMFG) recently convened for its April meeting at Canterbury Christ Church
The meeting coincided with CCCU’s Engineering Poster Day, giving employers a valuable opportunity to engage directly with students and see first-hand the range and quality of project work being undertaken across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
A key highlight of the visit was the opportunity to hear from students presenting their project posters, covering a wide range of engineering challenges and real-world applications. Employers were encouraged to ask questions, provide feedback and vote on presentations, enabling meaningful two-way dialogue between industry and students.
The standard of work on display was extremely impressive, with students demonstrating strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills and professional communication. Their enthusiasm and confidence were a real credit to Canterbury Christ Church University and highlighted the value of embedding employer engagement within engineering education.

Attendees also took part in a tour of the Engineering department, offering insight into the excellent facilities available to students and businesses. Members heard about the University’s approach to industry collaboration, including project-based learning, consultancy opportunities and developing initiatives in areas such as robotics, automation and inclusive CPD pathways.
These discussions reinforced the important role that closer collaboration between employers and education providers plays in strengthening the local skills pipeline and supporting workforce development across Kent & Medway.
KMFG would like to thank Canterbury Christ Church University for hosting the event, and in particular Jack, Heather, Adil and the wider Engineering team, for organising such a welcoming, informative and well‑run session. Our thanks also go to the students for their professionalism and engagement, and to all attendees for taking the time to contribute so positively.
During the visit, members also saw the STEM Racing Programme in action, which garnered significant interest. The programme is currently seeking volunteer judges. Judges have the opportunity to meet student teams, hear their presentations, follow the full car development process and attend competitions and celebration events. CCCU supports the scheme annually, meaning there are both local and wider opportunities available. Participation is entirely no obligation.
Further details on becoming a judge can be found here.
The next Kent & Medway Manufacturing Focus Group meeting will take place on Wednesday 27th May, 12–2pm, at Brands Hatch Place Hotel. Free places can be booked here. We look forward to seeing you then.
